Corvette C7: Next-Generation Halo Car Arriving
The 'Vette is a halo car that has been produced for the whole sixty years. No wonder, the seventh-generation Corvette is so much awaited now. It is undoubtedly the most anticipated release in recent automotive history. Its development continues at full speed, but the first spy shots of a caught prototype allow us identify some aspects of the evolution between Corvette C6 and the C7. Before we get to the details, I should mention that the GM executives have been planning the model since 2007 and it was supposed to arrive in 2011, but since the release was delayed expect the C7 to make its official debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. While some rumors are put to rest due to photos of the С7 spotted testing, other details are still unknown. Find out about the details of the upcoming model below. As for the pricing, the base Corvette is to start at $52,000.
So... What's new for the next-generation of America's iconic supercar? The biggest change is the introduction of Chevrolet's upcoming Gen V small block V8 that will make 440 hp (an improvement over the current C6's 436 hp). Having already made its debut in the C6.R racecar, the 5.5 L V8 features a number of technical advancements, among which are: an aluminum block, heads and a revised combustion system. In fact, the new V-8 engine is a part of $890 million program committed for vehicles across the GM lineup. There are also other updates aimed at making the coupe a sports car to take on the world’s best. They are: more aerodynamic exterior and lightened chassis with a latter providing better handling and improved mpg.
Regarding the design, the C7 received more complex headlight elements which are more narrow, too. While the double-bubble roof returns, something like the scoop is found on the nose of such current models, as the Z06, Grand Sport, and ZR1. The other minor change found in its exterior is less rounded and slightly larger side mirrors. The quad exhaust tips are now combined and placed in a central row. There are also new rear side vents. While the 7-speed manual transmission will be available for the first time, the 7- or 8-speed dual-clutch automatic is still rumored. The C7 gains faster acceleration and enhanced weight savings due to new transmissions. It is also rather obvious that the rear end is now larger, having a bit higher deck lid and a bit shorter overhang.
